ANC EC SADDENED BY THE PASSING AWAY OF CDE ZAMUXOLO PETER

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with sadness of the passing away of PEC member and Member of Parliament, Comrade Zamuxolo Joseph Peter. Comrade Peter succumbed to COVID-19 related illness yesterday afternoon (Friday, 31 July 2020) in hospital.

Comrade Zamuxolo Peter was born on the 10th January 1965 in a small rural town village called Riebeeck East, 42km North West of Grahamstown now known as Makhanda,
He started his secondary schooling in Port Elizabeth where he studied at Masiphathisane High School, Motherwell and became an active member of the Congress of the South African Students (COSAS), Youth Congress and Civic Movement (all under the UDF). He continued with his secondary studies, obtaining an accredited course from Border Technikon in the Eastern Cape. Comrade Peter moved to Cape Town where he worked for six months and later returned to the Eastern Cape to work in one of the Dimbaza factories. Furthermore the party afforded him the chance to further grow his leadership skills in Beit Bele College in Israel. He later married his wife and were blessed with three (3) children.

Comrade Zamuxolo Peter was elected as Mayor of the Riebeeck East Transitional Local Council (TLC) in 1995. In 2000 he was elected as Ward Councillor of Makana Local Municipality until end of term (2011). His leadership qualities were further recognised when he was nominated and elected as Mayor of Makana Municipality in 2011, a position he held until 2015. The ANC later deployed him as Chief Whip and MMC of Corporate Services at Sarah Baartman District Municipality until 2019.

At the time of his passing, Cde Zamuxolo Peter was a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the ANC in the Eastern Cape , Member of Parliament (National Assembly) and served in the Portfolio Committee on Tourism and Standing Committee on Auditor General. Prior to that, he was the Regional Executive Committee (REC) member of the ANC in the Sarah Baartman region.

Comrade Peter clearly understood the tasks of our national democratic revolution. That made him to remain committed to finding solutions to various community problems.
He was a dedicated, committed, energetic and highly capable servant of the people. He has served this country exceptionally well as a cadre of the ANC. Comrade Zamuxolo Peter’s passing has undoubtedly robbed the movement of an outstanding revolutionary and a selfless compatriot.

The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Peter family, the ANC in Sarah Baartman and the entire Mass Democratic Movement. May the Peter family find solace in the knowledge that the entire nation shares their grief. We wish them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.
