The African National Congress (ANC) conveys its well wishes to the Tamil people in South Africa and across the world as they celebrate Tamil New Year.
As the Tamil people celebrate 5121 years, we wish to express our appreciation for their role in moral regeneration, social cohesion, poverty eradication and the advancement of black economic empowerment. The ANC is confident that other communities will emulate the noble and patriotic example consistently shown by the Tamil people in working towards a peaceful, non-racial and democratic South Africa based on the principles of social and economic justice.
We also wish to thank the Tamil people for their continued support and solidarity with the poorest of the poor. We urge them to continue along this noble path. The ANC believes that government, working alone, cannot succeed to adequately address the plight of the poorest of the poor. The contribution of all sectors of society is critical, and the Tamil people have been exemplary.
The ANC appreciates that today the Tamil community should have been in their temples. However, in compliance with lockdown regulations that seek to curb the COVID19 pandemic, this will not be possible. In this regard, we wish to thank the Tamil community for working with government in ensuring that we flatten the curve. COVID19 pandemic knows neither religion nor race. We are delighted, therefore, to see the Tamil community partnering with government to ease the burden placed on citizens’ shoulders by this pandemic.
On this special day for the Tamil people, the ANC also sends its fraternal greetings to the South African Tamil Federation (SATF). SATF has been a trusted ally of the liberation movement in the struggle to build a national democratic society. This day provides a welcome the opportunity for the ANC to reaffirm its partnership with the Tamil community.
The ANC wishes the Tamil community a blessed New Year.
