Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, will embark on a working visit to the Chris Hani District in the Eastern Cape, on Monday, 28 September 2020. The visit is part of his work as the District Development Model Champion for Chris Hani District.
The District Development Model is a government programme aimed at improving the coherence and impact of government service delivery, focusing on 44 districts and eight metros around the country as development spaces that can be used as centres of service delivery, economic development and job creation.
Through the District Development Model, government wants to fast-track service delivery and ensure that municipalities are adequately supported and resourced to carry out their mandate.
Minister Lamola will interact with various stakeholders in the district on how they can work together to improve service delivery; address the scourge of Gender Based Violence and Femicide and determine whether there are sufficient programmes in place to address the pandemic; as well as assess how the district has responded to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The engagements with stakeholders will also examine the level of implementation on key infrastructure and economic projects such as the:
• Bulk water and sewer upgrading
• Waste Water Treatment Works
• Komani Industrial Park Revitalization Programme (IPRP)
• Rural Sustainable Villages Project
• Irrigation Schemes
Minister Lamola will also contribute to the fight against Covid-19 in the district by donating Personal Protective Equipment to identified schools. Some of the PPEs were produced by inmates in various centres across the country.
